Abia, Nigeria - December 9, 2023 - The bustling city of Aba, Abia State, witnessed a historic event on Saturday, December 9th, 2023, as Uchenna Kanu, celebrated Super Falcons player and Abia native, launched the Uchenna Kanu Foundation alongside the inaugural Foundation Launch Cup. Returning to the city where her football journey began, Kanu expressed her gratitude and determination to inspire and provide hope for young girls pursuing sports.
Hailing from Uzuakoli, in Bende L.G.A of Abia State, Uchenna Kanu initiated her football career on the streets of Aba, honing her skills with grassroots clubs such as Standard Babes FC (now Abia Angels FC). Her journey, from the local fields to international stardom, involved a transformative education scholarship that took her abroad, balancing academics with her football passion.
With an illustrious career spanning professional football clubs in Europe and her current role as a center forward for the Super Falcons of Nigeria and Racing Louisville FC in the United States, Kanu felt a compelling need to contribute to the development of female footballers in her home state. This led to the official launch of the "Uchenna Kanu Foundation" at the Enyimba Football Club Stadium, Aba, coinciding with the Foundation Launch Cup.
The Foundation Launch Cup, made possible through generous sponsorship, included supporters like Oris Night Club, Champions Breweries, Mavlon Football Club, and Cerees Table Water. These sponsors played a crucial role in making the event a resounding success, highlighting their commitment to community development and youth empowerment.
A highlight of the event was a scouting football match between Solo Wonders Football Club and Giants Empress FC, culminating in a 2-1 victory for Giants Empress FC. This victory provided young girls with the opportunity to be scouted by prominent universities in the USA, with scouted players offered education scholarship programs abroad.
Trophies, medals, and valuable rewards were presented to players and officials of both teams. Uchenna Kanu, demonstrating her commitment to nurturing talent, gifted each participating female player with a pair of football boots, while goalkeepers received gloves. Giants Empress FC claimed a cash prize of Three Hundred Thousand Naira (#300,000) as winners, and Solo Wonders FC, the runner-up, took home Two Hundred Thousand Naira (#200,000).
In addition to the sporting spectacle, the event featured captivating performances by local entertainers, adding a cultural touch to the celebration. Uchenna Kanu's foundation stands as a beacon of empowerment, promising continued support for the development of female footballers in Abia State and beyond.
